in Recipes, Reinventing leftovers

Last weekend I decided not to go shopping. My fridge was bursting at the seams with unwanted leftovers, semi-finished packages and forgotten ingredients. At that point in time that I decided to conduct my very own  iron chef competition. Against myself. The secret ingredient?  to come up with several dishes for the upcoming week using only what I had on hand.

Three different bags of rejected leftover bread, one lonely pitta and a single hot dog bun yielded me two savory bread puddings. Cheesy. Herby. Mmm. Really good with any tomato sauce you have on hand.

An open package of smoked beef frankfurters, some frozen peas, my two last carrots and some plain white rice transformed  into a quick fried rice.

A freezer excavation won me  a long forgotten family pack of chicken drumsticks. I also had potatoes on hand that I wanted (needed) to pass. Soon enough my trusted slow cooker was full of Greek style chicken and potatoes that smelled wonderfully from garlic and olive oil.

By the time Sunday came to an end I was quite pleased with myself. My fridge was bursting all right, but this time with  containers of fresh food. I had not spent a penny on unnecessary groceries and have won in my kitchen stadium. The only missing was the cleaning crew. Sigh. I guess I got a little carried away. Do you really think these guys will go through all that every week If they knew they will end up with all the dishes?

It’s coming! we had a week almost without internet. Can you believe it? I nearly died from the withdrawl symptoms.

It does on my computer! both at work and at home. Maybe you need to update your browser’s version?

Good luck and thx for the feedback.

Yes! I do this about once every couple of months too! It’s amazing what collects in your fridge, freezer, and pantry. It’s a fun challenge too.
