Whenever you crave a simple family meal that everyone can agree on, try this recipe.
My Italian friend Adelina fed her version of this recipe to my kids & I more times than I care to contemplate. And it was always a hit. If ground beef is such a natural match to spaghetti, why not try the real thing?
The idea is to simmer the beef in a fragrant and simple tomato sauce for as long as you can endure the amazing scent. A perfect match for the slow cooker. Adelina cooks hers on stovetop but you know me, I can’t be bothered.
The entire recipe is assembled in your cooker and then simmers to perfection. No prep in sight.
Slow Cooker Tomato and Beef Cube Sauce for Spaghetti
1 Kg or so of beef cubes for stew
1 large can of crushed tomatoes (800 ml or 28 Oz). If you get your hands on one of these glass jars of Italian
1 can (156 ml) of tomato paste
5 garlic cloves, minced
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp dry oregano and/or 1 large handful or fresh basil
1. Straight in your slow cooker insert, mix together all the sauce ingredients.
2. Add beef cubes and stir once or twice.
3. Close the lid and let simmer for as long as you can, between 8-10 hours.
When done, steal a cube to make sure the meat is tender. Hide the incriminating evidence and gather up the troops. Serve on top of spaghetti. If the beef is all eaten, the sauce is wonderful by itself.
